I am a student at Western Michigan University, pursuing a degree in Secondary Education with a major in Spanish, and a minor in English. I also studied violin performance at Calvin College for 3 years and completed a minor in music.
The song above was written by me when I was in High School, in 2009. Although I am very interested in teaching, music is also very much in my heart. I love to compose new music, although I am still working on the written and recorded aspect of it. I often improvise on violin with different local bands and have recorded with a few of them as well.
The picture on the above right is of me at Machu Picchu in Peru. I was able to be involved in a study abroad program with the Spanish department at Calvin College and lived with a family in Arequipa, Peru, for four months in 2012. My time there helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the Peruvian culture and to improve my Spanish.
In the future, I hope to work either as a teacher in a bilingual elementary school or with ESL students. I have a deep desire to work with the Hispanic community, whether in Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, or in a Spanish speaking country. Through my service learning experiences with an after-school program in Grand Rapids and a Literacy program in Kalamazoo, my teacher aide experiences with migrant worker children in Lawrence, my volunteer work with illegal alien children at Bethany Christian Services, and my time spent in Peru, I hope to be able to connect with Spanish speaking communities throughout the world.
